Leg Day Routine: Donkey Kicks, Supported Lunge, and Static Raised Lunges

Well, it's leg day somewhere always :) If you are looking for some new exercises to diversify your leg day routine, here are some. All you need for these is a chair, table, or stool. Do each of these for about 4 sets of 10 reps on each leg (that's 20 per set) to really burn those glute, quad, and hamstring muscles.

Leg Work: Single Leg Deadlifts

Compound exercises that work a variety of muscles are great, especially for runners as we need a strong core and strong legs. The single leg deadlift works your core as it forces you to balance, but it also works your legs and your glutes with the weight that you are lifting. Check out the video below for how to do this exercise.

Try this with light weights first and progress. As you do this exercise, lift your leg slowly. A lot of people make the mistake of speeding through, which may not put as much emphasis on the muscle they want to attack. So go slow. It hurts a little more, but you can do it :)

April Booty Challenge Day 30!!!

It's the last day of the challenge! Thanks to all who participated. I hope you are well on your way to that bodacious booty :)

Now, for today's video, to end the month, I am giving 2 options of the same exercise:
  1. Front kicks: This is slower and more controlled
  2. Jumping front kicks: This involves some cardio work
See the video for more. If you are a newbie, it may be best to start with the first option and gradually build to the jumping front kicks. Whichever you choose, do it for 1 minute, and repeat 5 times.

April Booty Challenge Day 29

One more day to go! There are 3 exercises today and they all require doing one side and then the other. Do 30 secs on each side for a total of 3 mins. Repeat 3-4 times.
  • Kneeling to standing: You'd be surprised that this actually works your bum.
  • Side plank leg lift: If you are adventurous, try option 1 with palm on the floor. If not, do option 2 with elbow on the floor. Both are in the 2nd video.
  • Lying inner thigh lift: Target those elusive inner thighs. Keep your foot straight and try to lift from your heel.

April Booty Challenge Day 28

If you have been following this challenge, you are probably wondering why there has been a gap. I have had limited access to the internet for the past couple of weeks and so I apologize. However, I have been putting these up on Instagram, so hopefully, you have been following it there :)

Back to today. We should be able to do these longer now since we've been strengthening our glutes and legs all month. So let's go for 1 min 30 secs of each (45 secs each leg for alternating).
  • Cross donkey kicks
  • Wall sits
  • Side plank with a leg lift

April Booty Challenge Day 8

Doing squats with lunges in between each rep helps to attack different glute and leg muscles at the same time. Try this series for 3 - 4 sets of 20 reps.

April Booty Challenge Day 1

Let's start with the squat. You can do it with only your body weight or increase the resistance by holding dumbbells. Note the anatomy of the squat: Sit back into your butt like you're sitting in a chair, not forward. So your knees should remain as static as possible. Squeeze your bum when you go down and when you come up, and look forward! Try to do 100 today (break it up as you wish).

April Booty Challenge!

This month, we will be focused on our derrieres, aka the booty and the legs. A well shaped booty is always highly revered, regardless of size. And I'm going to give you some quick routines to help you get there :) Look out for the videos and photos on my Instagram page and on here too. Let's get that bum this month.

Lunge Kicks

Mix up your lunges with kicks when you lift off. You get some cardio in, and work more muscles in your legs. Try it on your next leg day.

Want to do Some Cardio and Also Work Your Legs? Try Heel Flicks!

Heel flicks can be used as a warm up for runners, as a cardio exercise on their own, or to work on your legs. But how about all three? :) The workout from TribeSports that I posted last night had heel flicks and you might be asking what that is.

How do you do it? Start by jogging either in motion or on the spot. Slowly start to kick your heels back with each step until your heels touch your bum as you run. Easy!

Don't be worried if your heels don't initially hit your bum. Sometimes, it takes practice. The more you do them, the better your body will move.

TribeSports: Leg/Ab Superset

You want great legs and abs, right? Well, here's a new challenge to try. This does not absolve you of your jumping jacks though! You're still expected to get that 6000 done. I have tried this and boy... that 5 times is a killer.

For full details on the challenge, to check how others are doing, and to view other amazing challenges, check out the challenge on the TribeSports website.

One-Legged Wall Sit

You know I love my butt, thigh and leg exercises, and so I thought I'd share one today. I talk about the squats a lot, and so most of you know how to do that by now. However, rather than pulse as far up and down as you do in the squat, you can still work your lower body with other similar exercises. One of these is the wall sit.

Day 17 of the March Booty Challenge!

Hello fellow squatters! Okay, that sounded all kinds of weird. But how has the Booty challenge been going? We are at day 17 now, which is 170 squats today. We've gone more than halfway through the month! I'm pretty proud of all those who have been doing the challenge.

Ready to Work Those Legs?

Nice toned legs are one of my favorite body parts. Get beautiful legs by doing cardio (of course), and doing strength training specifically focused on the legs. I like to alternate days with my strength training. i.e. upper body one day, and legs the next training day.

Here is a great routine you can try (see image above). You'll be on your way to long lean legs in no time. If you have some more time, try the routine twice :) It incorporates cardio and strength training. See below for a description of each exercise.

Inner Thigh Workout

I shared this inner thigh exercise on Instagram, and wanted to share it with you as well. Whether you are trying to simply strengthen your legs all over, improve your balance, get a better looking butt, or crack a coconut with those babies, your inner thighs are a very important part of your lower body, but they are often overlooked.

For this exercise, follow these steps:
  • Lie on your right side
  • Hold your core tight
  • Make sure you are not leaning backwards, but lying completely on your side
  • Bend your lower knee (your right) 90 degrees
  • Lift that right leg off the floor using your core. Do not lift your knee.
The strength of your inner thigh, your butt, and your core should be what is lifting your leg. Make sure your other leg is not lifting off the floor, and your body is not leaning backwards. Do about 4 sets of 15 reps.

When you begin, you may not be able to lift your leg that high, but the more you do it, the higher you can lift.

Vertical Frog Jumps

Want to work on those legs? We are used to the the regular squats and lunges I always talk about. So how about we try something a little different? I was skimming through Fitness magazine and saw this move that I thought was great for the legs and butt. It incorporates both a squat and a jump.
  1. Start in a standing position and then squat like you would regularly do. However, in this squat, widen your knees a little, and lower your palms to the floor. Yes, literally like a frog.
  2. Propel your body upward starting by lifting your arms. But make sure the force of your jump comes from your legs.
  3. As you land back down, try to land softly to not put so much impact on your joints.
  4. Crouch and repeat.
See the video below for more details.

The Importance of Balance in Running

The debate about the most efficient way to run has gone on for decades. Is it on bare feet? Is it in heavily padded shoes? We've heard opinions from different sides of the table. But before we get that far, let's talk about why shoes are important in the first place.

Balance and core strength are two very important factors in running because you spend most of your running time on one foot or the other, but not both. It may seem intuitive, but they are probably also the most neglected factors with runners. And what happens when you neglect them? You hurt your ankles, your knees, or other muscles and joints in your lower body.

Ever watch professional races? Do you notice that people from certain countries (i.e. Kenya, Ethiopia, etc.) tend to dominate the sport? Ever wonder why? Well, I'll tell you! In America and other countries, when we train to run, we train on surfaces that have been built to be even, like the track or on asphalt. And then we run in shoes that cost more than we make each month, which are usually heavily padded to provide enough support so we aren't working as hard. The problem is that these things spoil our bodies so we aren't also training as hard.

In a country like Kenya, when they start to train from a young age, they do so on natural surfaces that don't have the evenness we have created on our surfaces, and they train mostly on bare feet or close to bare feet on an elevated plane. This forces their bodies to learn to balance naturally on different types of terrain in different levels of air pressure. This balance definitely gives them an edge.

Did you know that statistics show that most runners hurt their joints each year? I think this tells us that there is a problem. We are supposed to balance on the balls of our feet in the middle of our feet,  but a lot of us do not have strong enough legs and so end up landing on the outsides or insides of our feet, putting all the pressure in our knees and ankles, and hurting ourselves in the process.

Stand on one foot. If you wobble at all, you may need to work on your balance. Get this: If your hips shake from right to left involuntarily as you walk, you may need to work on your balance. Yes, I hear women sigh everywhere.

Okay, we've established that most of us have balance issues. What can we do to fix it? Do exercises that work on your inner thighs, do exercises that require stability (like the one I do with the Bosu ball above), do exercises that build a strong core (not crunches; things that require holding your body up, like planks), run on uneven surfaces, and monitor your feet as you land. Improving your run could mean exerting less energy on balance and gaining more mileage.

Cycle Your Bum Away

Yesterday, my friends and I decided to cycle around lower Manhattan, across the Brooklyn Bridge, and around Prospect Park in Brooklyn. It was an awesome experience. The funniest part of the trip was right after our break. We stopped at a little Mexican spot close to the Brooklyn Bridge on our way back for some drinks and some dinner, and then got back on our bikes. None of us expected the burn our thighs were feeling after we had sat down for a bit. I mean, what did we expect after 3 hours of cycling?

Like running, or any other cardio exercise, you get a full body workout and burn tons of calories by pushing your body in a repetitive motion. Beyond burning calories though, cycling helps strengthen the muscles in your legs and butt because you're constantly pushing on the pedals to propel your bike forward, especially if your going uphill.

Beyond just your bum, your legs and thighs also get a great workout. Your quads tone up from the forward leg motion, your hamstrings tone up from the backward leg motion, and your abs tone up from constantly keeping yourself upright on the bike. To get an even better workout, make sure your heels lower towards the ground on whatever foot is lower. That way, you work your calves as well.

Granted, cycling at a steady pace does not burn as many calories as running at a steady pace, which is why it is important to include hills in your route. The hills also help build muscle strength and stamina. And you need that stamina to push yourself as you climb up that hill.

If you're looking for a cardiovascular exercise, and running just isn't for you, look into cycling. The great thing about it is that you could buy a bike and cycle everywhere. If you live in a cosmopolitan city, chances are that your city has good bicycle routes and lanes to make it easier for cyclists. Take advantage and burn your way to your summer weight. I woke up today with post-workout burn in my thighs and butt, but it was totally worth it.

Cycle your cities and share photos with us.

Proper Squat Form - Eights & Weights Video

I got a chance to make a video for my favorite exercise! Today, we're looking at the proper form for a squat. As you know, this exercise works out your bum, thighs, and even your core if done right. Here are a few points to note with the squat:
  • Keep your knees behind your toes. If your knees are going beyond your toes, you're not working your bum as hard and you could hurt your joints.
  • Keep your upper body as upright as possible with your shoulders down and core tight. You get a core workout if you do that as well.
  • For balance, you can straighten your hands out as you lower in to the squat. Otherwise, keep your arms beside you.
  • Squeeze your bum as you lower down and as you come up. You get an even better workout that way.
So I've told you how to do it, and now I'll show you how to do it. I put together the video below. Watch and enjoy.
