Climbing the Monserrate for the First Time

So, I'm currently in Bogota (that's in Colombia for the geographically challenged :)), and as you can imagine, I've been spending a lot of time doing physical activity. It is a tad difficult out here because of the altitude of the city, so it's easy to get that heavy air pressure feeling in your head, your ears, and even your chest while working out. But I'm doing this anyway.

The Monserrate is the highest peak in Bogota, about 10,300 feet above sea level. You get such a beautiful view of the city from the top. In natural fashion, when I heard about it, I figured I have to climb it. Most people take the funicular (which is like a cable railway) because of the elevation and how steep the climb is. But some do walk it, more in pilgrimage because there is a Cathedral at the top, which holds a lot of religious significance for some Bogotanians.

Let's talk about that climb. It took me about 50 minutes with a couple of rest stops. Because I went on a Sunday, and it gets really packed with tourists on Sundays, there was no room to run. Which means we walked to the top. It was an amazing experience though.

If you are ever in Bogota, I suggest taking this climb. It is one of a kind. Just be really careful, especially when there are many people, because it is very steep and one wrong step can cause you to hurt yourself or someone else. Also, it is over 10,000 feet up, which means if you are not used to higher altitudes or lots of air pressure, you could get sick halfway through (headaches, the exploding feeling in your ears, and your heart beating way faster than normal).

Besides all that, it is a safe climb as many people do it. Some people take their children as well. Yes, it is CRAZY difficult, but it is doable. I'll be back there next week trying to beat my time.

Cheers Eights & Weights!
