The 2013 Brooklyn Half Marathon

The Brooklyn Half Marathon is one of those races I have wanted to do every year, but couldn't because something always came up on the same day. So when spots opened up for this year's run and I was available, imagine my excitement!

If you are familiar with the way races operate in New York City, you'd see that this one was different. It was the first major race since the Boston Marathon happened, and so security was super-tight. But also, you could tell that there were no garbage cans along the route, check-in was more secure, and you could only bring clear bags in (unless you had a fanny pack or something really small).

The spirit of the 20-something thousand runners that came out was amazing. The course was relatively flat, starting at the Brooklyn Museum, and going in and around Prospect Park for a few miles before going straight down to Coney Island. Pushing your body through 13.1 miles with 20,000 people is a very major experience. If you haven't tried a big race before, I'd recommend it.

My finishing time was just under 2 hours (about 1:59:30), which I thought was great consistency for 13.1 miles. My goal was to finish in under 2 hours so I'm pretty happy I did it. I'm looking forward to next year already!

I had my FitBit Flex band on during this run, and it literally called me an 'overachiever' when I went home and synched it up...lol. I guess it didn't realize I was going to wake up the next morning and do the AIDS 10K Walk again. Anyway, read more about the FitBit Flex here.

I hope you all had a lovely weekend as well :)

Cheers Eights & Weights!
